ULLEN SENTALU Javanese Culture Museum, located in Kaliurang area (North Jogja). In addition to enjoying the cool air on the slopes of Mount Merapi, it would be nice to take a moment to stop by a well-organised & artistic museum. There, visitors are invited to learn more about Javanese culture.

Ullen Sentalu Museum, located in Pakem, Kaliurang (north of Yogyakarta) is a museum that showcases the culture and life of the princesses/women of the Yogyakarta Palace along with a collection of various batik (both Yogyakarta and Surakarta styles).

The museum also displays the figures of the kings (Sultan) in the Yogyakarta palace and their empresses with various kinds of clothes worn daily.

The name Ullen Sentalu is an abbreviation of the Javanese: "ULating bLENcong SEjatiNe TAtaraning LUmaku" which means "The flame of the blencong lamp is a human guide in stepping and walking through life". This philosophy is taken from an oil lamp used in shadow puppet shows (blencong) which is a light that always moves to direct and illuminate our life journey.

At Ullen Sentalu Museum, one can learn how the Javanese ancestors made batik, which has a deep meaning and significance in each pattern. There are also various histories of the ancient Javanese culture with all its rules. The well-constructed museum makes visitors feel like they are being absorbed into the marvellous ancient Javanese era.
