Exploring the Majestic Temples of Central Java
Prambanan Temple
Prambanan is a masterpiece of Hindu culture from the 10th century, renowned for its stunning architecture and towering structures. Rising 47 meters high, its elegant design makes it one of the most magnificent Hindu temples in the world.
Located 17 kilometers east of Yogyakarta, Prambanan was built by King Balitung Maha Sambu in the 9th century. Its walls are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs depicting the epic Ramayana story. Named after the village where it stands, this Shivaite temple is also locally known as Roro Jonggrang Temple, or the Temple of the Slender Virgin.
Surrounded by lush green fields and villages, the Prambanan complex consists of 224 temples. Among them, the three main temples are dedicated to:
• Shiva (the tallest at 47 meters, positioned between the other two)
• Vishnu (south)
• Brahma (north)
The Shiva temple also houses a magnificent statue of Durga, Shiva’s consort.
Sewu Temple
Sewu Temple, whose name means "A Thousand Temples" in Javanese, is closely linked to the legend of Roro Jonggrang and Bandung Bondowoso. According to folklore, Bandung Bondowoso attempted to build 1,000 temples in a single night as a condition to marry Roro Jonggrang. However, historical inscriptions reveal that the original name of this temple is Prasada Vajrasana Manjusrigrha.
Plaosan Temple
Plaosan Temple was built in the mid-9th century by Sri Kahulunnan (Pramodhawardhani), the daughter of Samaratungga, a ruler of the Sailendra Dynasty. She married Rakai Pikatan, uniting Buddhist and Hindu traditions.
The Plaosan complex consists of two Buddhist temples:
The temples are separated by a road but are considered part of the same complex. Plaosan Lor features two main temples and an open pavilion (mandapa), along with an entrance gate and Dwarapala guardian statues. Inscriptions and reliefs found at Plaosan and Kalasan temples raise intriguing questions about the region’s religious diversity during that era.
Sambisari Temple
Sambisari Temple is unique because it is located 6.5 meters underground. Unlike other temples, it is not visible from a distance, as it was buried under layers of volcanic ash and stones following the Mount Merapi eruption of 1006.
For centuries, the temple remained hidden beneath the debris until its rediscovery. Today, the area has been beautifully restored, with four stairways leading down to the temple, allowing visitors to explore its well-preserved architecture.
Kalasan Temple
Kalasan Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Central Java and Yogyakarta, predating even the colossal Borobudur Temple. It is located along the main road between Yogyakarta and Solo, about 2 kilometers from Prambanan Temple.
Standing on a 45x45 meter rectangular base, Kalasan is an important historical site that offers insight into early Buddhist architecture and influences in Java.
