Jomblang Vertical Cave – The Hidden Light of Gunung Kidul
Beyond its royal heritage and centuries-old temples, Yogyakarta is surrounded by breathtaking natural wonders — from the majestic slopes of Mount Merapi to the mystical southern coast of Parangtritis Beach. Hidden deep within the Sewu Karst Mountain Range, stretching from Central to East Java, lies one of Indonesia’s most remarkable natural attractions: Jomblang Cave.
Located in Jetis Wetan Village, Semanu Sub-district, Gunung Kidul Regency, about 50 km southeast of Yogyakarta (or 10 km from Wonosari town), Jomblang offers a rare blend of adventure, mystery, and natural beauty. Although not widely known among casual tourists, the cave is famous among caving enthusiasts and nature adventurers worldwide. Its fame grew after being featured on the CBS reality show “The Amazing Race” in 2011.

A Natural Wonder Thousands of Years in the Making
Jomblang is a vertical collapse doline cave, formed thousands of years ago when the surface ground and vegetation plunged into a massive sinkhole about 50 meters wide. The locals call such sinkholes “Luweng”, hence its local name Luweng Jomblang.
Descending into Jomblang requires the Single Rope Technique (SRT) — a vertical rope method used in caving. Beginners, however, can safely explore the cave under the supervision of professional local guides who provide all safety gear and assistance.
There are four main descent tracks with varying difficulty:
• VIP Track – 15 meters of a steep walking path followed by a 20-meter rope descent; the easiest and most commonly used route.
• Track A – 80 meters vertical descent.
• Track B – 60 meters vertical descent.
• Track C – 40 meters vertical descent.
The Hidden Forest and the Heavenly Light
At the bottom of Jomblang Cave lies a hidden paradise — a primordial forest that continues to grow since its formation. Here, sunlight filters through the sinkhole, nourishing tall trees, mosses, and ferns that create an otherworldly green oasis beneath the earth’s surface.
From this underground forest, a 500-meter natural corridor leads to Grubug Cave, home to two giant stalagmites and the legendary Light of Heaven. Around midday, sunlight pierces the cave’s ceiling, forming a mesmerizing column of light that illuminates the darkness — a sight so ethereal that many describe it as one of nature’s miracles.
To the north, an underground river flows through the cave system, connecting to other caverns in the Sewu Karst range. During the dry season, visitors can even explore it by rubber boat, although the adventure is not recommended during the rainy season due to strong currents.
